Chroma ❯ I fell down into this dark and lonely hole, there was no one there to care about me anymore. I needed a way to climb and grab a hold of the edge, you were sitting there holding a rope. | ||||||||||

A skin-changer is a creature who is able to take on a different form at will. Chroma is a descendant of Areli, a family of skin-changers who spend most of their lives in the form of a swallow. They believe it is their responsibility to live apart from the world in order to remain pure and untainted by its corruption.
Characteristics:
- Their multi-colored eyes and pale complexion (human) are a stark contrast to the bright blues and greens that adorn their feathers in their avian-like state.
- The Arelians are unable to 'half-shift'. They must be fully human or fully swallow.
Strengths:
- Live in large communities that help to protect and look out for one another.
- Enhanced vision and reflexes aid hunting and self-defense methods.
- Their 'Bird Song' can have an effect similar to a 'Siren's Song', but rather stimulate a soothing or comforting effect.
Weaknesses:
- Their belief in living apart from humanity leaves them vulnerable from outside attacks and predators.
- Their frail bone structure is appropriate for flight but renders them fragile in their human form.
- Spending the majority of their life in their avian form will reduce their life expectancy to roughly 12 years.

❯ history
Chroma remembers very little before Keishara and Garrick took him in. He believes he was born somewhere in the Kingdom of Lahara, amongst the marshes and wooded swamps of the amphibious kingdom. Though he has foggy memories of his mother singing him to sleep and his father sitting on his head during the cold spells, Chroma can't recall much of his parents, only the inhospitable chill their absence brought into the nest.
A hatchling at such a young age couldn't have survived on its own for long. The world outside of the nest was dangerous. felid creatures stalked the undergrowth, and birds of prey kept a careful watch over the skies. It had been rooted in him from the beginning that he was only a very small bird, one that didn't even know how to fly at that. And it was a very big world, one with all sorts of predators and monsters that could eat him in seconds.
As the nights grew colder, Chroma began to worry his parents had moved on without him. Perhaps migration had come early? During his brief isolation, a steady wind had picked up from the East and at the time, it had been the perfect solution. Motivated mostly by fear, the young sparrow clambered to the edge of the nest, somehow convinced the East wind would carry him to his parents.
But how could such treacherous wind know how to handle such a delicate first-time flyer? Contrary to the way his plan was supposed to unfold, the hatchling only plummeted down into the dark forest. The sharp wind did little to ease his ungraceful descent upon the forest floor. Until that time, Chroma had been ignorant to the discomfort physical pain could bring.
Upon impact, he suffered a mid-shaft transverse fracture of the tibiotarsal bone (basically the equivalent of fracturing your tibia) in both legs. The severe shock and loss of security forced Chroma to shift within moments. This only increased both the pain and the trauma he suffered as a child. Until that point, he had never doubted his lineage as a mere tree swallow, and then suddenly...well, he didn't even know what he was anymore.
Alone in the dark swampy woods, Chroma spent the entire night just lying there, frantically watching the shadows for any sign of predators he'd grown to fear.
It was Keishara, the Blacksmith's wife that found him the next morning. The apothecary took the child in without hesitation, tending to his injuries and never leaving his side the whole way back to Sarilevo.
Chroma was the first orphan the deVin's took in, and they were very intentional about raising him as a 'human' so that he might fit in with society. Already Chroma stood out with his odd appearance, so they thought it would be best if he feigned normalcy.
When he reached adolescence, Garrick started to bring him around the forge more often. He had hoped to train the boy to become a farrier but found Chroma was far too skittish around the horses and ended up causing more harm and damage than anything else. After months of no progress, Garrick turned the boy over to Keishara. She taught Chroma everything she knew about her trade and surprisingly the boy exceeded.
It became apparent Chroma had found his place in the clinic and the herb garden, not outside in the real world. Even though he is genuinely happy with the deVin's, he has never been able to suppress his inner longing to return to his homeland, Lahara, despite the old haunts that await him there.

FUN FACTS
Memory → Chroma has a better memory than he gives himself credit for. His memory is significantly enhanced by color, allowing him to remember things for a longer period of time and in greater detail. The more colorful an experience is, the clearer he can remember it.
Lost Experiences → Given he's spent the majority of his life in his human form, Chroma has likely outlived his parents and he has never learned to fly.
Superstitions → Chroma will believe almost any superstitious lie he is fed. Because he feels threatened by the world around him, his anxiety prevents him from separating superstition from truth.
Traumas → Chroma still views the world in terms of predator in prey. The instinct is ingrained in his DNA, and he has a hard time interacting with his environment. Loud noises, people, or even environments are enough to trigger his 'flight' response. In any situation he deems dangerous, he will be up and outta' there in a jiffy. And by jiffy I mean a few hours cause dang he slow.
Religious Views → While he doesn't follow any specific religion, Chroma believes in the power of good and evil as separate entities battling for dominance over the world. Through kindness and good acts, one can increase the force of good and bring further balance to the world. Similarly, one can increase the force of evil in the world through corrupt and wicked acts, thug bringing further chaos and hardship.
Spirit Animal → Despite being an avian, Chroma is about 99.9% convinced his spirit animal is a worm. Worms spend most of their lives in the dark before their lives are viciously ripped away from them.
Abnormalities/Disorders → When he was young, Chroma broke both of his legs (see history). Thanks to his caretakers, he's regained function of both his limbs, however he still walked at an awkward limping gait. This is mostly psychosomatic and due to the lack of strength in the bones. After his traumatic childhood experience, Chroma suffers from mild separation anxiety. He can't stand being alone, especially without one or both of his 'parents'.
